The Sharp Nine "house band" represented here (David Hazeltine (piano), Eric Alexander (tenor saxophone), Joe Locke (vibes), John Webber (bass), Joe Farnsworth (drums)) is gaining a growing reputation for inventive straight ahead mainstream jazz.
Supplemented by Daniel Sadownick on additional percussion on three tracks, the core of the album is an ambitious tribute to the music of the Montgomery brothers and Cedar Walton composed by leader David Hazeltine. "The Inspiration Suite" comprises 26 minutes of music divided into four sections: "Motivation", "Reverance", "Insight" and "Gratitude". It's no "A Love Supreme" but it is a very accomplished reflection on the music of these jazz greats that provides a good platform for Joe Locke and David Hazeltine himself to shine.
The album is bookended by five further tracks. The two openers, "I Should Care", (a take on the Sammy Cahn standard) and "Don't Walk Away" (an additional David Hazeltine composition) are easy going vehicles with time and space for all three soloists to stretch out. For the three closing tracks, a trio version of the Leo Robin /Richard Whiting/Newell Chase song "My Ideal" is followed by versions of Cedar Walton's "Shoulders" and Buddy Montgomery's "Personage Of Wes".
Strong, straight ahead mainstream jazz.
